Product Description

CD Description

On the soundtrack to the film EBAN & CHARLEY, Stephin Merritt graduates from accomplished songwriter and frontman (of the iconic Magnetic Fields) to bona fide composer. The disc also marks Merritt's first truly solo outing, and a rather daring first effort at that, given that the film covers the rather taboo subject of an affair between a 29-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy. However, Merritt's trademark deep, brooding voice complements the melancholy subject matter perfectly. The pop songsmith also flexes considerable musical muscle by composing the entire soundtrack himself in his own studio, resulting in both abstract instrumental sketches and lush, fully fleshed-out pop songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Typical brilliance, 13 Aug 2004
Not every artist can concentrate on quantity and quality simultaneously but between his 4 main bands and solo material, Stephin Merritt has kept his output high in both capacities. I've not seen Eban and Charley, or indeed even seen the record on sale in London, so this was the last piece of Merritt's output that I'd heard. Compared to his other soundtrack album for Pieces of April, this work is heacy on the instrumental side, but even where you'll miss his deep voice, the songs are typically Merritt and typically brilliant.

I hesitated to buy it, but was not disappointed. The burden of living up to his own discography, however, may be what stops this from being one of his best albums.
